The client wanted to renovate and extend his wonderful ground floor apartment located in the hip neighbourhood of Amsterdam West.

The house occupies two united ground floor apartments of two buildings built in the 1930s. It has some great features, first of all it has double the width (9,0 m) of a normal 30's house, it has a great garden facing West and very high ceilings. The client was to create a very open house that feels spacious and light. By taking advantage of the aspects mentioned above, plus the fact that you can extend the house into the garden, makes it possible to create a grand house with an open floor plan, spacious, liveable and with great natural light.

The apartment has two differentiated parts, a private area next to the street where the children's bedrooms are located, and the living area that is at the back of the house and opens up to the garden.

Within these spaces the functions are divided by height differences, the living room has platforms going down into the garden, while the private areas sink into the ground to create more privacy.

All the spaces are connected and open, the only closed spaces are the lavatories. These are boxes that "float" within the general open space. These boxes are the more playful design items within the house.
